Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 55 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 67 over thirty month cattle, 5,701 prime lambs and 5,146 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 12th November, 2009.

Quality sorts of clean cattle were dearer on the week. Top price of 182.5p for a Limousin bullock paid by W. Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown to J. & N. Blaylock & Sons, Hallburn, others 178.5p Haining House, 173.5p Nether Onsett, 171.5p Hallburn; Charolais 176.5p, 170.5p The Lake. Heifers sold to 170.5p for a Limousin from D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage. Young bulls to 164.5p and 157.5p from J.P. Lee, Morley Hill.

The 67 OTM cattle on offer were a plainer show. Limousin cows to 139.5p Morley Hill, 128.5p, 111.5p Nunscleugh, 110.5p Morley Hill and Nunscleugh; Shorthorn 106.5p Minsca; Black & Whites 102.5p Plumpe, 100.5p Becton Hall. British Blue heifers to 159.5p Low Todholes; Limousin 147.5p Nirvana. British Blue bullocks 151.5p Nirvana. Limousin bull 91.5p Broadhaugh; Angus 84.5p Laalsteins.

Another large show of 5,701 prime lambs saw all classes keenly sought after, short in supply and dearer on the week. The 4,438 lambs over 36 kilos averaged 156p and the 1,263 lambs under 36 kilos averaged 161p. Overall average of 157.8p per kilo.
