Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 47 prime cattle, 0 young bulls, 63 over thirty month cattle, 6,034 prime lambs and 4,786 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th October, 2009.

Clean cattle were dearer to a top of 179.5p for Limousin bullocks from N Forster, Haining House and Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn, both to W Kirkup, Butcher. Others to 170.5p, 169.5p Slealands.
Limousin heifers to 175.5p Brydekirk Mains and Hallburn to Messrs Malone, Edinburgh & Border Meats, others to 173.5p Hallburn.

A poor show for quality in the OTM section with well fleshed sorts in short supply. Friesians to 117.5p, 111.5p Roanstree, 102.5p Newby Farm, 99.5p Windy Hill and Woodslee. Luing 109.5p Glendearg; Angus 92.5p Pottalloch. Limouisn heifers 119.5p Westhottbank; Angus 125.5p Blindhillbush; Galloway 112.5p Peela Hill. Galloway bullocks 111.5p Peela Hill. Galloway bulls 87.5p Roan Farm; Angus 85.5p Leahaugh.

Another large entry of lambs and a full ring of buyers ensured that the large numbers of sheep forward averaged 142.2p on a week where elsewhere suffered poor trades. 4123 lambs over 36kg averaged 142.7p, with the 1911 under 36kg averaging 140.6p. The sale was topped at £77 for Suffolks from Blackhaugh and to 170p for Beltex from Messrs Cavers, Sorbie.

Another large show of ewes sold to the ususal ring of buyers with trade £3 to £4 dearer on the week. Good well fleshed continental ewes were short of demand, with all hill types sought after.
