The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 44 prime cattle, 55 over thirty month cattle, 5,154 prime lambs and 5,943 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 1st October, 2009.

A smaller show of clean cattle were a sharper trade. Top of 183.5p paid by W. Kirkup & Son, Butchers for a Limousin bullock from N. Forster, Haining House. Limousin heifers from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, sold to 181.5p to Messrs Nattrass, Carlisle.

The 55 Over Thirty Month cattle were also dearer, with Limousin bullocks to 136.5p Newtown; Shorthorn 135.5p Braemar. Charolais bull 103.5p (£1,102) Glendearg. British Blue cows 137.5p Ladyhousesteads, 134.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage; Limousin 128.5p Shankbridge End, 115.5p Ladyhousesteads, 107.5p Desoglin; Luing 119.5p Glendearg; Angus 104.5p Desoglin, 103.5p Glendearg. Angus heifers 113.5p Rinnion Hills.

A smaller show on the week of 5,154 prime lambs were forward and sold to a full ring of buyers, all keen for sheep which saw averages dearer on the week. An overall average of 145.8p was achieved.

The 3,246 lambs 36 kilos and over averaged 149.4p with best Texel and Beltex lambs regularly 170-190p, with a top price per kilo of 197p for Beltex’s from Mouldy Hills. Top per head of £78.80 for Beltex’s from A. The 5,973 ewes and rams were forward to a full ring of buyers. Trade was sharper on the week by around £3.
