Longtown Primestock Sale
2009-09-10

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 59 prime cattle, 59 over thirty month cattle, 6,962 prime lambs and 6,111 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 10th September, 2009.

The 59 clean cattle forward were showing signs of the weather. Top prices of 173.5p for Limousin bullocks from A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen. Heavyweight Limousin bullocks (730kg) to 171.5p High Moat Farm. Limousin heifers to 167.5p D. Robley, Townfoot.

The 59 Over Thirty Month cattle on offer saw well fleshed sorts maintaining late rates with plainer sorts cheaper. Hereford heifers to 133.5p and 129.5p Enzieholm. Limousin cows to 145.5p Chestnuts; Charolais 116.5p Moss Side; Galloway 107.5p Nickies Hill; Friesian 104.5p Kilmaho. Limousin bulls £1,320 Becks. Limousin cows £1,113 Chestnuts; Charolais £926 Moss Side; Hereford £754 Enzieholm; Ayrshire £738 Metal Bridge.

A larger show of 6,962 prime lambs was forward to an increased ringside of buyers. Lightweights were forward in larger numbers and didn’t meet the same demand as export and heavyweights, The overall average was 148.4p. The 2328 lambs under 36kgs averaged 142.6p with the 4665 lambs over 36kg averaging 150.6p. Top price per kilo was 185p for Texels from Nunscleugh. Top per head of £83.50 for Texels from Messrs K. & M.
