Longtown Primestock Sale
2009-08-20

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 92 prime cattle, 7 young bulls, 24 over thirty month cattle, 5,907 prime lambs and 6,123 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th August, 2009.

Clean cattle lacked overall flesh. Top price of 179.5p, 175.5p and 173.5p for Limousin bullocks from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, all to W. Kirkup & Son, Butcher, Longtown, others 170.5p and 167.5p (x2) Dashwellgreen, 169.5p Newby Farm. Limousin heifers from J.W. Slack & Son, Newby sold to 170.5p.

The 24 Over Thirty Month cattle were dearer on the week. Limousin heifers to 139.5p Swaites; Belgian Blue 129.5p Swaites; Shorthorn 131.5p, 119.5p Bloch. Limousin bullocks to 119.5p Black House. Limousin cows to 117.5p Swaites; Simmental 115.5p Sceughdyke; Charolais 113.5p Snab Farm; Friesian 100.5p Townhead and Harelawhole.

A large quality show of 5,879 prime lambs met a fast selling trade to average 148p, minus 7p on the week. Top price per kilo was 173p for Texels from Messrs Bell, Winterhope, Lockerbie, with many pens making between 160p and 170p. Top per head of £77.20 for Suffolk crosses from Messrs W.L.
