Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 89 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 28 OTM cattle, 5156 prime hoggs and 3078 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 26th March, 2009.

All classes of clean cattle were sharper on the week. Top price of 184.5p for an Angus bullock from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn and purchased by W Kirkup & Sons, Butchers. Limousins to 180.5p, 178.5p, 176.5p, 175.5p Corby Castle, 178.5p Hallburn, 177.5p The Gill; Blondes 181.5p Toppin Castle;

A smaller show of OTM cattle again met extreme rates with Belgian Blue bullocks to 146.5p Braemar; Bluegrey to 145.5p, 134.5p Braemar; Limousin 143.5p Camping Holm. Another grand show of prime hoggs. A full ring of buyers saw hoggs the dearest trade of the season so far with the whole sale averaging 187.8p. The 1784 hoggs under 36kg averaged 186p and the 3372 over 36kg averaged 187.6p. The sale was topped at £112.50 for Texels from Messrs Jamieson, Woodhead and to 227p for Texels from LE Grice & Son, Newtown.

The firm also held a show and sale for Blackface hoggs kindly sponsored by Johnson Tractors, Carlisle. The show was judged by R T Booth, Closenook, who awarded the championship to a pen of 20 from Messrs Coltman, Haystown/Glenesk, Peebles and scaling 40kg realising £80.20 to the judge.
