Name The Lamb Competition Launched
2009-03-26

This is the Wensleydale lamb that farmer Mark Elliott hopes will continue his family’s proud tradition of success at the Great Yorkshire Show – and now it’s time for you to get involved!

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which organises the Show, launched A Lamb’s Tale earlier this year to give visitors an insight into what is involved in showing livestock.

Video footage on the event’s website will document the various stages of the lamb’s development, right through to the climax in the show ring.

But a name is needed for this female Wensleydale lamb, part of the flock at Providence Farm, Ferrensby, near Knaresborough, and the Society is asking for suggestions.

In return, the person who chooses the winning name will receive a hamper of Easter goodies from Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate and a family ticket to this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, which takes place at the Showground in Harrogate from Tuesday – Thursday, 14 – 16 July 2009.

Deborah Goodall, spokesperson for the Society, said: “Showing livestock means much more than just a day or two of preparation. We wanted to give the full picture of what’s involved in getting an animal ready for showing and hope people will follow the story through the regular video updates on our website.”

The Elliott family have 19 breed championships under their belt and have successfully shown their Wensleydale sheep at every Great Yorkshire Show since the Second World War. They know better than most what’s involved in catching the judge’s eye, and will be aiming to do so again in all six Wensleydale sheep classes this year.

Among them will be this young lady – but what will she be called? Suggestions should be sent either by email to: gyslamb@yas.co.uk or by post to: A Lamb’s Tale Naming Competition, c/o Sally Wall, Yorkshire Agricultural Society, Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG2 8PW. Entries should arrive no later than noon on Monday, 6th April. Remember to include your full name, address & telephone number with your entry.
