Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 92 prime cattle, 1 young bull, 30 OTM cattle, 5,587 prime lambs and 6,590 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 11th September, 2008.

All classes of prime cattle again met a fast selling trade. Top price of 184.5p for a Limousin heifer from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn, others to 178.5p Brisco Hill, 176.5p Swaites, 174.5p Upper Mains, 172.5p Newby, 169.5p Houghton House & Slealands. Charolais 167.5p, 165.5p Hallburn. Charolais bullocks from Hallburn to 181.5p, 180.5p, 177.5p; Limousin 178.5p, 176.5p Hallburn, 174.5p Houghton House; Galloways 155.5p Skitby.

The OTM cattle maintained late good rates with Angus cows to 114.5p Desoglin and Holstein Friesians 114.5p Stubbyknowe, 113.5p Laalstains, 107.5p Southlambhill; Shorthorn 109.5p Whitedyke; Simmental 104.5p Byreburnside; Galloways 95.5p Peelo Hill; Bluegrey 93.5p Dodgsonstown.

The prime lambs were presented to a full ring of buyers with well fleshed lambs 38kg+ in demand and in short supply. The 3,642 lambs above 36 kg averaged 126.8p and the 1877 light lambs under 36kg averaged 109.4p and were less sought after due to Ramadan festivities.

The overall sale average was 121.8p. Top price was £74.50 for Texels from Messrs Flett, Tankerness, Orkney and to 143p for Texels from the same. Light lambs were harder to cash due to Ramadam festivities and a large show for numbers. The cast ewes were another large show and were steadier on the week to the usual ring of buyers, but with well fleshed ewes still easily sold.
