Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 77 Prime cattle, 0 Young bulls, 20 OTM cattle, 775 Spring lambs, 2688 hoggs and 3254 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 31st May, 2007.

In the prime cattle section under 24 month heifers were dearer and in demand whilst other classes met with similar rates.

Limousin heifers to 135.5p. 129.5p from A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen, Charolais 127.5p Dashwellgreen, Belgian Blue 113.5p Hallburn.
Limousin bullocks to 133.5p The Gill, Charolais 118.5p Hallburn, Simmental 111.5p Sceughdyke, Blondes 125.5p The Gill, Belgian Blues 126.5p The Gill, Galloway 110.5p Becks Farm.

Over Thirty Months (OTM) cattle sold to 112.5p (£635.63) for Limousin steer from J Tinning, Burnfoot On Esk, Friesians 73.5p Hethermill.

OTM heifers to 70.5p for Limousin from Hethermill. Friesian cows 65.5p Rowanburnfoot, Limousin 75.5p Bleatarn, Luing 74.5p Scabcleugh.

Spring lambs were a similar entry and trade was very strong, with all classes short of requirements. The overall price per head was £53.77 to a top of £66 for Texels from Mr. Fleming, Hillhead, others £63.70 Cardew Hall, £62.80 Cowans, Charollais £61.70 Burnside, Suffolk x £64.70 Cleughfoot, £62.50 Cardew Hall, £62.20 Burnside. Oxfords £52 Guards. The overall average was 133.1p to a top of 144.3p for Texels from Rottington Hall.

Light lambs were also very dear and many more could easily have been sold. Top was £47.80 for Suffolks from Newbiggen, others £45.50 Rottington Hall, £44.90 Cowcorse Cottage, Texels £48.70 Newbiggin, £46.80 Stackbraes. Top price per kilo was 142.1p for Texels from Mossband House. The overall average was 130p

Prime hoggs met the best trade for several weeks to average 104p overall, many more could easily have been sold. Top was £53.80 for North Country Cheviots from J P Fisher, Smalmstown, Hill Cheviots £51 Bloan, Suffolks £52.70 Branteth, Texels £50. 70 Branteth, Greyfaces £52.20 Sockbridge Hall, £51.20 Bayldon, Blackfaces £50.20 Smalmstown, Swaledales £41.80 Sykehead & Cleugh Head, Kendal Roughs £42.90 Haithwaite, Shetlands £43.70 Inglewood Farm. Export hoggs sold to 124.1p.

Lightweight hoggs averaged 115.9p to a top of 132.4p for Cheviot hoggs from Beechcroft, who also had top price per head at £43.70 for the same. Texels £40.80 High House, Blackfaces £37.80 Beechcroft, £37.20 Haithwaite, North Country Cheviots £41.80 Plump, Swaledales £34 Beechcroft, Shetlands £42.70 Inglewood Farms.

The cast ewes and rams were again a good show and buyers were keener so as a result all classes were slightly sharper on the week. Top was £72.50 for heavy Texel ewes from Hillhead, others £70.50 Tobermore. Beltex £60.50 Hillside, Suffolks £67.50 East Cliff, Suffolk x £63.50 Cardew Hall, £62.50 Coltcoats, Bleu de Maines £62.50 Ballyclare, Charollais £64.50 Waterloo & Easthouse, Halfbreds £54.50 Broomfield, North Country Cheviots £56.50 Branteth, Leicesters £57.50 Ballyclare, £56.50 Easthouse, Oxfords £60.50 Roadside, Greyfaces £45.50 Sockbridge Hall, £43.50 Stanley House, £42.50 Cardew Hall, Hudspeth, Mossthorn & Caberson, Cheviot Mules £44.50 Stackbraes.

Hill ewes £46.50 for Cheviots from Thomas Telford, Blackfaces £42.50 Newington & Brownleazes, £41.50 Kellah, Swaledales £35.50 Crowdieknowe & Croglin High Hall, £35 Mossthorn, Herdwicks £29.50 Powheads, £28.50 Butterdales, Lleyns £37.50 Guards.
