Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 65 prime cattle, 1 young bulls, 19 OTM cattle, 783 spring lambs, 5538 hoggs and 4015 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 24th May, 2007.

In the prime cattle section heifers sold to a top of 129.5p for Limousin from J & N Blaylock & Son, Hallburn to W Kirkup, Longtown, others 124.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage, Charolais to 117.5p Hallburn, Blondes 110.5p Sceughdyke.

Bullocks also sold to 129.5p for Limousin from A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen to M Wharton, others to 128.5p from Dashwellgreen and Hallburn. Belgian Blues 124.5p The Gill, Hereford 116.5p Hallburn, Charolais 115.5p Sceughdyke.

Young bulls sold to 108.5p for Charolais from Fawcettlees.

OTM feeding cattle to 74.5p for Limousin cows from The Nook, Friesians to 73.5p Horsegills, 62.5p Plumpe, 61.5p Prior Rigg, 60.5p Plumpe, Ayrshires to 60.5p Plumpe. Friesian heifers to 66.5p Peterscrook, Simmental heifers 69.5p Riggshield.

The Spring lambs were a larger entry, buyers were keener and as a result all classes were dearer on the week to average 124p overall to a top of 163.2p for Texel crosses from Messrs Harrison, Sykehead, others £58.90 Nirvana, £57.80 Hermitage. Suffolks £60 Hermitage, £58.10 Guards Mill, £56.80 Sykehead, Charollais £52.80 North Greenhill & Yett, Beltex £57.80 Sykehead, Lleyns £50.70 Priorsford.

Light lambs were also good to sell to average 125p to a top of 129.6p for Texels from Hawthorns. Top was £40.20 for Texels from Hawthorns, who also sold Suffolks at £39.90.

Another large show of prime hoggs for the time of year and with the usual buyers in attendance, as expected all classes were easier in line with the national trend. Top price per head was £56.50 for Texel hoggs from Messrs Robb, Dinwoodie Green, others to £52.20 Hillside, Suffolk x £46 Fen Farm, £45.40 Sockbridge Hall, Cheviots £45, £44.80 Bloan Farm, Charollais £45.80 Hillside, Halfbreds £43.20 Sockbridge Hall, Greyfaces £45.80 Sykehead, £44.80 Brisco Hill, Cheviot Mules £40 Viewley & Gillbrae, Blackfaces £46.20 Kirkland of Longcastle, £44.80 Southways, North Country Cheviots £45.10 Sockbridge Hall, Swaledales £42.80 Oswie, Jacobs £34.20 Haithwaite, LLeyn £42 Priorsford, Kendal Roughs £37 Priorsford, Zwartbles £38 Hudspeth, Shetlands £39.70 Sykehead, Welsh Mountain £41.90 Hoddom. Export hoggs sold to 112.3p for Texels from Craigdhu.

Light hoggs if good quality were still in strong demand to £35.20 for Suffolk x from Criffel View, Cheviot £33.90 Pasturewood, Texel £33.80 Criffel View, Greyface £33 Beechcroft, Cheviot Mules £33.80 Viewley Farm, Blackfaces £31.90 High Fen, Swaledales £27.40 Finchley, Shetland £30.80 Criffel View.

The cast ewes and rams were a larger show and with the usual buyers present all classes were easily upheld at late high rates. Top was £80.50 for Suffolk rams from Easthouse, Texels £74.50 Roadside, Charollais £70.50 Derwent Brae, Leicesters £72.50 Dairy Farm, Beltex £56.50 Newry, Bleu de Maines £60.50 Redhouse, Cheviots £55.50 Glendearg, Jacobs £40 Dairy Farm, Zwartbles £40 Dairy Farm, Blackfaces £41.50 Glendearg.
